Production recording
Piquet Hill Stud is a strong supporter of performance recording and selection for structural soundness. The stud was a member of the original Romney Development Group, screening more than 100,000 ewes for performance. In recent years there has been a strong emphasis on Facial Eczema testing and delivering structural soundness to the sheep we breed. For 40 years Piquet Hill has operated its recording through Sheeplan, Animalplan, and SIL.

Facial Eczema
The stud has tested hundreds of rams over a period of 30 years for Facial Eczema tolerance. We regard ourselves as having one of the highest tolerant flocks in NZ for Facial Eczema. This is judged by the very high levels of Sporidesmin used to test rams. The results speak for themselves.
With increasing pasture growth from better grass species, increased fertiliser application, and the effects of global warming, Facial Eczema has become a major constraint to overall production in sheep in the North Island and in the north of the South Island.
We have numerous clients who have used our FE tolerant rams exclusively over a long period of time and have reduced their incidence of Facial Eczema to virtually nil. The longer you continue to buy rams from breeders who do not test for F.E. tolerance the worse your Facial Eczema problem will become.
Worm Resistance Programme
We have recently embarked on an intensive programme to breed worm resistant sires, which are then tested for Facial Eczema tolerance.

Dr Clive Dalton has given Piquet Hill Stud a simple, long-term protocol for worm resistance, built around the work we have done with Facial Eczema and Production Recording.
Cross Breeding Composites and Purebreds
We produce a Breeding Composite using our proven base of Romney F.E. tolerant ewes
as the foundation. We have used our Romney base flock crossed with Perendale, Texel, Finn, and Coopworth genetics to produce this composite. The results using these crosses for a specific purpose has given quite outstanding results. It is a pleasure to see so many of our clients achieving high performance without the constraints that, so often, have bedeviled this industry. The sires are tested at .5 to .6 mg/kg LW of Sporidesmin.
